Rein Maychaelson – Second-Hand Body Parts & Plenty of Big Favors

In Rein Maychaelson’s short film at Berlinale 2025, a mother searches for the body parts of her son. He was able to detach them as kind of a superpower but died when he gave them all away.

Films, too, are the sum of many parts that do not always come together as expected. Especially when you shoot a star-studded film like Sammi, Who Can Detach His Body Parts in Indonesia on a small budget. In our interview, Rein reveals how much of his Berlinale Shorts entry came together in unexpected ways and that he had to pull a lot of favours to bring his vision to life.
